Team 2 - 64
Indianapolis – Having locked up the best overall record, Team 4 decided to rest some of their starters. Tamba Samba sat out with a sore hamstring and Peter Dinwiddie skipped today’s game with a strained work load.
Team 2 still hoping for a playoff spot knew this game could help them get there. For the 2nd game in a row Team 2 hit a shot at the halftime buzzer to keep the score close. This week Vance Catiln’s rebound put back as time expired help trim Team 4’s lead to just 4 at the break.
In the 2nd half Team 4 built a 12 point lead with 4 minutes left before Team 2 went on a 13-2 run capped by a Vance Catlin 3 with 1:22 left in the game to cut the lead to 65-64.
After getting two defensive stops, Team 2 called a timeout with 40 seconds left. The play was designed to get the ball into Alan Mowrey in the post and go from there. As Mowrey spun baseline Kyle Krol came over from the weak side to steal the ball.
Team 4 made 1 of 2 free throws and left the door open for Team 2 to tie or even take the lead with a 3. Doug Morgan pushed the ball up court and got the ball to Vance Catlin on the wing. Catlin went for the win and shot a contested 3 with 5 seconds left. Krol Krol grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and then iced the game with 2 free throws.
Alan Mowrey scored 28 points in the loss. Mike Weisberg scored 29 points and none better than this gem at the expense of Alex Montagano
Team 1 – 63
Team 5 – 43
Edmound Elzy recorded the first Triple-Doulbe in PFOL history (not counting Jake Vernon’s 10 points, 10 turnovers and 10 airball game in 2010). Elzy scored 18 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. Team 1 used an 18-4 run to secure a victory over a short handed Team 5 who drops to 1-6 on the season but will still have a shot at getting into the playoffs if they can beat Team 2 by more than 6 points next Friday.
“This is just like what the Lakers do, they go through the motions for 3/4ths the game and then decide it’s time to close it out and take it up another notch and finish the game off. That’s what we did today”, said Edmound Elzy.
When asked about Troy Brokl missing the game, Elzy said: “I didn’t even realize he wasn’t here”.
Steve Reitan played the best game of his career as he grabbed 14 rebounds and had 5 blocked shots. “He has been a force this season in the paint”, said Elzy.
Reitan leads the league in block shots with 2.75 blocks per game (22 total on the season). That is the most blocks in PFOL history since the league started keeping that stat 8 weeks ago.
