PFOL Draft Recap

Indianapolis - The PFOL 5 draft was held on Monday at Conseco Fieldhouse. Five players were chosen to be the GMs of their respective teams. Alan Mowrey, Troy Brokl, Brian Stutzman, Eric Flatt and Kyle Krol all would be drafting the remaining 31 players. The start of the draft was delayed for over 10 minutes when a very upset Edmound Elzy stormed the draft room demanding he be a GM.

Each GM selected a number out of a hat and that number determined what order the draft would be in. The Accounting Firm of R. Laycock and Associates was on hand to witness the picking of draft positions.

Troy Brokl won the #1 pick and promptly picked Edmound Elzy who then quickly pushed Troy aside and took over all picks from that point on.

Alan Mowrey held the 2nd pick and he snagged up the consensus #2 pick in Vance Catlin and Eric Flatt picked Richie Smith with the 3rd pick. Then the wheels came off.

Kyle Krol shocked everyone with his #4 pick and selected Rookie Tamba Samba. "I've only seen him play once, but that one time was all I needed to know", said Kyle Krol. Samba might be the most athletic player in the draft but many experts had him going late in the 2nd round in most Mock Drafts.

Brian Stutzman closed out the 1st round by picking Jason McGuinness with the #5 pick. "I was very lucky that J-Mac was there at #5", said Stutzman.

Some other noteworthy items from the draft included:

  • Jason Rost dropping to the 2nd round

McAlister's Deli Game Summary - Finals

Indianapolis – After a two week break due the to the Pacers NBA playoffs, PFOL resumed it’s playoffs and crowned a new champion. Team 1 came into the Finals with the best record in the league and faced the 3rd seeded Team 4.

Team 1 jumped out to an early 9-2 lead behind the hot shooting of Jason Rost. Team 4 settled down and went on a 17-4 run and went into halftime with a 9 point lead. In the second half, Team 4 showed no signs of letting up as they cruised to an 84-61 victory.

Richie Smith led Team 4 and nabbed the PFOL’s first ever triple-double with 17 points, 10 Rebounds and 10 Assists. Nathan Burger helped Team 4 shoot a blistering 55% from the field by scoring 22 points on 8 of 11 shooting. Jason Rost led Team 1 in scoring with a game high 24 points on 9 of 23 shooting. Eric Flatt owned the glass as he grabbed 22 rebounds; almost equaling the total rebounds Team 1 had (27).

This is Vance Catlin’s third PFOL Championship and Richie Smith’s second. For all of the other players on Team 4 this is their first championship.

“It feels so good to finally get a ring. Everyone was lumping me in the same category with Edmound Elzy – good player but has never won a ring. Now I am finally off that list”, said Alan Mowrey. “I hope that we can all play together next season. I would love to see if we can repeat. I’m going to do everything in my power to see that this team stays together”.

Game Notes and other Misc

• Richie Smith recorded PFOL’s first traditional triple double. (Jake Vernon had a triple double in season one, with 10 points, 10 turnovers and 10 fouls).

• Jake Vernon was technically on Team 4’s roster at the start of the season. This would have been his 3rd championship.

• PFOL was honored before tip off as the 3rd best league to play in Conseco Fieldhouse for the 4th straight season.

• PFOL 5 is scheduled to tip off in May.

• John Griffin missed the game due to personal reasons and not because Alan Mowrey mistyped his email address.

McAlister's Deli Recap - Playoffs Round 1

Team 4 - 45 Team 2 - 42

Indianapolis - Team 4 learned that they would be playing their playoff game without their All-Star guard Richie Smith only minutes before tip off. Team 4 playing with a full squad for only the 2nd time all season looked confident as they knew Team 4 would miss the shooting and overall leadership Smith brought.

Team 4 came out shooting and jumped out to an early 10-2 lead; a lead that they would never relinquish.

Alan Mowrey got Team 4 off to the fast start with 2 early three pointers. They extended their lead to 11 by halftime. Edmound Elzy did everything he could to help his team claw back into the game. Down by 7 with 1:21 left to play he connected on a driving layup and then immediately stole the ball off the inbounds pass and scored again to cut the lead to just 3 with just over a minute to play.

After a few missed free throws by both teams, Team 2 found themselves down 3 with 8 seconds left. The ball found it's way back out to Elzy who had a game-tying 3 rattle in and out as time expired. "I had a clean look at the shot, I even yelled, 'OVERTIME!' while the ball was in the air.

"I couldn't believe the shot didn't go in", said Elzy.

"I knew the shot was off the second I saw him shoot it. I have seen him miss that shot too many times in my career. There is a reason he is called the Tracy McGrady of PFOL", said Jason McGuinness.

Team 4 was lead by Alan Mowrey who finished with 22 points including a couple of momentum changing 3's. Elzy lead Team 2 with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

Team 4 advances to the finals to face John Griffin and Team 1. Game 1 is on Friday April 8th.

Week 5 Recap

Team 3 – 54
Team 1 - 42

Team 3 knew what was at stake Friday. Win or chances of making the playoffs would be gone. They used that as a motivation to get their first win of the season beating Team 1 54-42. Grant Gibson (20 points) and Kyle Krol (16 points) lead the way over a John Griffin-less Team 1. “I took a nap in the locker room and didn’t wake up till around 2pm. My bad”, said Griffin.

Team 1 had already locked up a playoff spot, so this game in all regards was a meaningless game. “Not to me damn it. I spent 3 seasons losing when I played with Elzy’s team. I’ve had my fill of losing. I never want to lose another game”, said Eric Flatt. Flatt did not hide his disgust as he stormed off the court with just over a minute left in the game. “People need to recognize who the best player on the floor is. I am the one that needs to get 27 shot attempts if we want to win”, said Flatt. He was referencing the 27 shot attempts that Jason Rost took in the loss.

Despite the win, Team 3 knew they did not control their fate. They needed Team 2 to lose to Team 4 in the 2nd game in order for to have a chance at post season play.

Team 2 – 49
Team 4 – 36

Team 2 has 7 active players on their roster yet amazingly they have used 16 different starting lineups. Dave Neff made a rare appearance for Team 2 on Tuesday, but still they were only able to field 5 players. Team 2 came out and looked very determined to secure a playoff spot. They knew that a win Tuesday would guarantee them a spot in the PFOL playoffs next week.

What was known to only a few players was that if Team 2 won by more than 6 points they would guarantee themselves no lower than a 2 seed due to tie breaker rules.

Team 2 came out firing behind the energy of Rob Laycock. "He has been the 150 pound lighter version Tyler Hansbrough of our team. He brings energy each an every play", said Sam Elmore.

Laycock continue to make a case for "Most Improved Player of the Year" award. He chipped in with 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

"I have to give him credit. When I drafted him I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into with that pick. It turned out to be a great pick" said Edmound Elzy.

"He said that? It's amazing that he offered him up in a trade earlier this week", said Alan Mowrey.

Team 2 lead the entire game and indeed ending up winning by 7 points which means they hold the tie breaker over Team 1 and Team 4 if they should end up in a tie for #1 seed or #3 seed.

"I don't care about seeding. I don't care who we play. I know we can beat any team in this league at any time. And you can call Montagano and tell him that I will print that quote out myself and hand deliver it to their lock room for them to post".

"One thing I do care about is that this is the second week in a row, that Team 2 has used Laycock's bloody knee as an extra time out. I'm not saying that the extra 4 minute break we took was the reason we lost, but it definitely played to their advantage. They only had 5 players and they were for sure getting tired and then all of sudden Laycock calls an injury timeout to tend to his knee. The timing was perfect."

Playoff Scenario

With a 3 way tie for first place here is how the seeding will play out after week 6.

- If Team 4 wins and Team 2 loses, Team 4 will be the #1 seed.

- If Team 4 wins and Team 2 wins, Team 2 will be the #1 seed based on the 2nd tie breaker

- If Team 1 Wins and Team 2 loses, Team 1 will be the #1 seed.

- If Team 1 wins and Team 2 wins, Team 2 will be the #1 seed based on the 2nd tie breaker
